The novel opens with a playful defence of its own artistic purpose, as the author chats with a friend about realism, idealism and the sheer joy of mixing beauty with truth. From that witty preamble we are thrust into a luminous hall where a saint’s feast erupts into a riot of masks, champagne, and glittering décor, all described with a painter’s eye for detail. The scene buzzes with the clink of glasses, the murmur of wind against frosted windows, and a cast of eccentric guests poised to turn ordinary conversation into spirited performance.
In the first act, characters such as the rotund Aniceto, the boastful Filiberto and Felice, and the sharp‑tongued sisters Barbara and Fanny‑who argue over blondes versus brunettes‑take the spotlight. Their banter, laced with satire and a hint of social commentary, reveals a community both self‑absorbed and yearning for connection. Warmth, humor, and a touch of melancholy weave through their exchanges, promising a narrative that explores identity, desire, and the thin line between appearance and essence.
