Description

A massive grain‑elevator known as Calumet “K” looms over the muddy banks of a river, its towering bins half‑erect and its timber frame still a chaotic skeleton. The project has been plagued by bad luck and slow progress, prompting the firm’s head to dispatch a seasoned troubleshooter, Charlie Bannon, from Chicago to take charge. From the moment his trolley rattles past the dusty site, Bannon senses the uneasy rhythm of a crew working against the elements and an unwieldy schedule.

Stepping onto a rickety plank walkway, he navigates swamps, sidelong freight trains and a cramped shanty that serves as the foreman’s office. Bannon’s keen eye scans blueprints spread across a desk while the laborers haul timber, and a stout, crimson‑tied supervisor mutters good‑humored curses at his men. As Bannon surveys the unfinished spouting house and the snarled railroad tracks, he prepares to impose order on a operation where superstition and stubbornness threaten to stall the whole enterprise.
