Busy Ben and Idle Isaac
BUSY BEN,
In a pretty village, two boys grow up with entirely different ideas about how to spend their time. Benjamin is tidy, energetic, and eager to learn, while Isaac prefers lounging in the sun, wearing ragged clothes, and letting others do the work. Though Benjamin repeatedly warns his friend that good fortune cannot be taken for granted, Isaac remains unconvinced.
As the boys grow older, their choices begin to shape their opportunities. Benjamin’s willingness to work, learn, and improve earns him the respect of local farmers and the notice of a ship-builder, who offers him an apprenticeship. Isaac, meanwhile, drifts from one idle day to the next, never developing a useful skill or preparing for the future. With its clear language and gentle humor, this traditional tale follows the contrasting paths of two friends and reflects on industry, self-reliance, thrift, and the possibility of changing one’s ways.
