Description

Bumps is a rotund, accident‑prone boy who lives in a modest countryside hut with his mother. Though his days are filled with chopping wood and gathering berries, he dreams of finding a pot of gold to lift his family out of poverty. One sunrise he kisses his mother goodbye, tucks a rabbit’s foot for luck into his pocket, and sets off toward the city, his little legs already aching from the long trek.

Along the dusty road he spares a brown rabbit from a stray stone, and the shy creature immediately becomes his loyal companion. The pair share a hidden picnic basket the rabbit uncovers, and later the clever bunny distracts a hungry bear, leading the monster into a trapped hole and saving Bumps from danger. With a new friend at his side, Bumps continues his journey, his heart lighter and his hopes brighter than ever.

Marie Helene Gulbransen

Best known for the 1924 children's book Bumps and His Buddies, this little-known writer created a playful story world full of imagination, friendship, and gentle adventure. The surviving record is slim, which gives the book an old-fashioned, rediscovered charm.
