Description

A freshly commissioned officer steps aboard a Union warship in the waning days of the Civil War, eager to prove himself amid the roar of steam and the clang of cannon. The young Ensign Somers, newly promoted and still flushed with the excitement of his uniform, spends a brief furlough visiting family and a charming acquaintance before returning to the quarter‑deck. His eyes are bright with ambition, yet he already feels the weight of responsibility that comes with leading men in a tumultuous sea of conflict.

Onboard, the narrative follows Somers as he learns the rhythms of naval life under the legendary Admiral Farragut. Through daring blockade runs, tense watch‑calls, and the camaraderie of seasoned sailors, he discovers what honor, faith, and perseverance truly mean in wartime. The story captures the grit of 19th‑century seafaring while offering timeless reflections on duty, courage, and the promise of a young man striving to serve his country and his conscience.
