CHAPTER X - JACK GOES TO THE HEAD OF THE CLASS
A lone wanderer stumbles through a scorching desert, his body bruised from a night spent on a rocky ledge and his throat raw from thirst. As dawn struggles to break, a thunderous rumble grows into a massive cattle stampede that sweeps away everything in its path, leaving a grim tableau of death on the dry wash. The stranger, battling hunger and exhaustion, discovers a solitary corpse, its water‑filled canteen still barely clutched in a cracked hand.
With the dead man’s hat, letters, and a few bills now in his possession, the desperate traveler makes a risky decision: he will assume the fallen rider’s identity to buy himself a chance at survival. He drinks the remaining water, fashions a makeshift disguise, and whispers a promise to the silent body, hoping the ruse will carry him out of the unforgiving canyon. The opening pulses with raw tension, setting the stage for a harsh trek across hostile terrain where every step could mean life or death.
