The story opens on the bustling waters of Lake Ucayga, where Captain Wolf Penniman commands the sleek steamer Ucayga amid a bitter rivalry with the Lake Shore Railroad. Penniman, once a model of steadiness, now battles a growing habit of drink that threatens his judgment and his town’s fortunes. Across the lake, Colonel Wimpleton, backed by the wealthy magnate of Centreport, vows to wrest control of commerce from the railroad’s grip.
As the two transport systems clash, the competition spills into the lives of the townsfolk, stirring up danger and resentment. Young characters on both sides are drawn into the conflict, forced to choose between shortcuts and principle. Their efforts to halt the escalating feud hint at a deeper lesson about true leadership and the peace that comes from honest effort.
