Description

A determined Englishman sets out for the Confederate States, driven by a mix of personal curiosity and a desire to document a war unlike any the world has known. He plans to serve as a volunteer aide in the Virginian army, hoping to find material for a book that will intrigue readers back home. With introductions from high‑ranking Confederate officials, his journey is bolstered by official backing, yet he remains keenly aware of his outsider status.

Traveling through the North and then into the South, he navigates a maze of diplomatic subtleties, avoiding federal scrutiny while juggling the expectations of both Union and Confederate sympathizers. His observations are recorded for a prominent London newspaper, offering a candid, on‑the‑ground perspective of camps, strategies, and the everyday life of soldiers. The narrative captures the tension of a foreign observer caught between two warring worlds, promising listeners a vivid, first‑hand account of the early days of the American Civil War.

George A. (George Alfred) Lawrence

1827–1876

Best known for the once wildly popular Guy Livingstone, this Victorian novelist wrote fast-moving tales of sport, honor, and danger. Trained as a barrister but drawn to fiction, he became one of the key writers linked with the muscular style of mid-19th-century popular fiction.
