After a dazzling dance, Adele returns to the riverbank expecting an easy summer flirtation. In the canoe, David—known among their friends as “The Monk”—proves unexpectedly earnest, confessing that he has thought of little else since their kiss. Adele is amused by his intensity and pleased by the power she seems to hold over him, yet his shy devotion awakens a curiosity she cannot quite dismiss.
As David guides her away from the village and toward a secluded place among the pines, Adele treats their encounter as another playful affair, already imagining what she will tell her friends. But beneath the teasing and carefully managed poses, their exchange carries a deeper tension: he seems to be offering his whole heart, while she is accustomed to keeping hers safely out of reach. The quiet river, bright parasol, and deepening shadows frame a meeting poised between flirtation and something far more serious.
