Description

A lone traveler steps off a steam‑filled carriage at Amherst station, his breath turning to mist in the biting February air. The station’s porter and a sardonic master‑of‑ceremonies watch him with thinly veiled curiosity as he hurries across frozen ruts, his coat clinging to his shoulders like a shiver‑bound banner. Every chime of the distant church bell seems to count down to a concealed urgency that pushes him forward despite the frost that bites his cheeks.

He is bound for Poynings, a small hamlet that houses a family whose name echoes in his memory with both affection and resentment. A lover’s promise, an inheritance dispute, and a lingering sense of being the unwanted “black sheep” of a respectable clan drive his hurried steps. As he navigates the icy lanes, his inner monologue reveals a volatile mix of longing, sour jealousy, and a desperate need to make contact before nightfall seals the household’s prayers.

The listener is invited into a world of tight‑laced Victorian propriety where hidden resentments simmer beneath polite greetings, and every frozen footfall could tip the balance between reconciliation and ruin.
