BLACK FOREST - VILLAGE STORIES.
THE GAWK
THE PIPE OF WAR.
In a sun‑dappled corner of the Black Forest, a close‑knit village hums with the chatter of children and the clang of the smithy. Through the eyes of a nostalgic narrator we meet Aloys, a wiry boy known to his peers as the Gawk, whose bright costume and quick grin set him apart. He spends his days darting through fields, playing leap‑frog, and keeping younger children safe from the feuds that ripple through the hamlet.
When the older boys begin to gather each evening, piping tobacco and boasting their new silver‑tipped pipes, Aloys feels the pull of acceptance and quietly steals a pipe of his own. A frantic scramble sends the pipe tumbling to Jacob the blacksmith’s yard, where Aloys finds a sympathetic refuge. Each morning he walks to Jacob’s house, feeds the cattle and helps in the barn, a simple routine that hints at the growing place he is carving for himself in village life.
