Description

Madeline Irwin, a modern twenty‑three‑year‑old with sharp eyes and a quietly earnest nature, drops into the pastel‑filled sitting room of her friend Bertha, a strikingly pretty and clever young woman. Their conversation spins around Rupert Denison, a cultured gentleman who seems to hover between courtesy and evasiveness, leaving Madeline both enchanted and exasperated. Bertha’s gentle sarcasm and keen observations provide a foil to Madeline’s hopeful yearning, setting a lively tone of witty banter.

The story follows Madeline’s attempts to decode Rupert’s cryptic gestures—gifted books on Italian masters, red roses, and a series of elaborate excuses for missed dinners. Through evenings of letters, social gatherings, and the subtle pressures of early‑20th‑century expectations, she grapples with the fine line between admiration and self‑doubt. As the pair navigate the tangled etiquette of romance and friendship, listeners are drawn into a world where charm, ambition, and the fear of rejection mingle in a delicate dance.
