On a moon‑lit hillside, a massive gray‑and‑white dog watches a sleepy flock of sheep. Bill is a restless mix of husky, collie, mastiff and wolf, his powerful jaws and wild instincts constantly at odds with the gentle duty his master, Hardin, has given him. When an obstinate ewe charges, Bill’s primal urge to strike flares, only to be checked by the sound of Hardin’s evening bugle, a reminder that the sheep belong to his keeper and must be protected.
Hardin, a former soldier, trusts Bill implicitly, believing the dog’s many strands of lineage have blended into a steady, loyal spirit. Yet the narrative hints at a fragile balance: each night the horn summons Bill’s devotion, but the underlying feral streak whispers that the line between guardian and predator is thinner than it seems. The opening sets a tense, atmospheric portrait of a bond tested by nature’s raw impulses.
