Description

A displaced English gentleman, once loyal to a lost cause, finds himself rebuilding a life on the bustling streets of early New York. After the sudden death of his beloved wife, he immerses himself in the routine of a counting‑room, juggling ledger entries, fur trade prospects, and the constant chatter of his household staff. The city’s spring air and the distant glow of the Hudson provide a fragile backdrop to his internal struggle between duty and lingering grief.

Amid the clamor of apprentices, a spirited Scottish housekeeper, and the occasional visit from curious gentry, he confronts the ghosts of his past—royal courts, wild frontiers, and the love that still haunts him. Yet, as the sun sinks behind the rooftops, he is forced to decide whether to remain anchored in sorrow or to seize the uncertain opportunities the New World offers. The opening chapters set a vivid portrait of a man at a crossroads, where personal loss meets the promise of a fresh start.
