Description

At the edge of the great forest, the air is crisp with the scent of ripening grapes and the ember‑glow of autumn leaves. A young woman named Claire finds herself caught between the polite chatter of the Chevet household and the looming plans of Monsieur Cassion, who insists the family join an uncertain trek into the wilderness. In the quiet moments she pretends to work, her mind drifts back to the day the legendary explorer La Salle passed through, his gentle smile leaving an indelible impression that still warms her thoughts.

When a handsome stranger, René de Artigny, arrives on a canoe, the fragile peace of her world begins to tremble. Their conversation, sparked by shared curiosity about the distant forts and the tangled politics of New France, hints at a connection that could carry her far beyond the safe walls of home. As rumors of betrayal and ambition swirl among the settlers, Claire must decide whether to follow duty, desire, or the pull of the untamed frontier that beckons just beyond the window.
