Description

A sweeping English estate, Belchamber is presented as a jewel of Jacobean grandeur set amid rolling parkland, ornamental gardens, and a river that flashes through fountains and fish‑ponds. The house blends Italian Renaissance flamboyance with a solid, homely British feel, its terraces framed by ancient cedars, elm avenues, and towering oaks that hint at centuries of stewardship. The narrative paints a vivid picture of wealth and privilege: the lord commands most of the surrounding parishes, supports several clergy, and maintains a modest chapel for his household staff.

The story then turns to the colorful legacy of the marquises who have inhabited the manor. The third marquis, a habitual gambler, meets his end on a hunting chase, while his son, the fourth, mirrors his father’s indulgent pursuits—high‑stakes gaming, extravagant drinking, and relentless riding. Their excesses, paradoxically, keep the house largely untouched by renovation, allowing its art, books, and painted ceilings to survive largely as they were, awaiting the next chapter of the family’s turbulent saga.
