A spirited young lad, raised in the modest cottage of a country gardener, finds himself thrust toward a future as a steward’s boy in the grand, almost mythic Shonts estate. The house looms with marble façades, soaring towers and a glittering pond, while his mother and the garden‑master, Mr. Darling, press him into the traditional role of service. Bealby, however, balks at the notion of spending his life in the servants’ wing, arguing that he could be an engine driver, a soldier, or even a seafarer instead. His stubborn refusal sets the stage for a lively clash of wills between the boy’s restless imagination and the expectations of the landed gentry.
As the appointed day of his apprenticeship draws near, Bealby’s frustration grows into a plan to break free from the path laid out for him. With a mixture of humor and earnestness, the story follows his first bold attempts to escape the inevitable, hinting at a series of misadventures that will test his resolve and reveal just how far a youthful desire for freedom can carry him.

A pioneer of modern science fiction, this English writer imagined time travel, alien invasion, and invisible men with a mix of adventure and sharp social insight. His stories still feel lively because they pair big ideas with very human fears and hopes.
