Inside the colossal cotton mill that dominates the Ghent skyline, steam‑driven machines roar and whirl, turning raw cotton into fine threads. The endless chorus of clanking gears, creaking belts and whirring spindles creates a deafening hum that overwhelms any newcomer, while shafts of fading daylight struggle to penetrate the cavernous floor. Workers—men, women, and children—move like shadows among the massive apparatus, their lives intertwined with the relentless iron beast that devours both fiber and flesh. When the evening bell finally silences the engines, a sudden stillness settles over the vast interior.
At the courtyard, the laborers gather to await their wages, forming loose cliques of women, children, and the men who spin and weave. A fellow among the spinners cracks jokes, hinting at a forthcoming celebration that promises laughter and respite from the grind. Amid the chatter, a younger worker named Bavo catches the eye of the curious Lieveken, whose presence suggests a bond that may challenge the harsh routine. As night deepens, the mill’s echoing silence becomes a backdrop for whispered plans and the first stirrings of something beyond the toil.
