Description

On a cold winter morning the schoolyard bursts into a lively snow‑ball contest, where a group of boys tease each other about high throws and daring tricks. Among them is Joe Matson, a quiet but talented youngster whose arm is praised by his friends, and his best pal Tom, nicknamed “Sister” for a funny anecdote. As they line up to aim at a distant barrel, the playful rivalry hints at a deeper love of baseball that will soon take them onto the diamond.

When the snow melts and the baseball season opens, the boys trade their makeshift missiles for leather and wood, forming the school’s nine. Under the watchful eye of their enthusiastic classmates, they learn the art of pitching, batting, and fielding, discovering that teamwork and perseverance are as important as raw skill. Readers will follow Joe’s early attempts, his growing confidence, and the spirited contests that shape a memorable chapter of school sports life.

Best known as the pen name behind the lively Baseball Joe books, this Stratemeyer Syndicate house name is closely tied to the work of Howard R. Garis, one of the busiest children's writers of the early 1900s. The stories blend sports action, teamwork, and school-day adventure in a way that still feels breezy and fun.
