Pete lives on the edge of a small town, where a sleek glass rocket has landed in a farmer’s pasture like a dark dancer. While his grandmother and mother view the craft as a terrifying reminder of lost loved ones and the dangers of space, the boy sees it as a promise of freedom and the chance to ask the enigmatic Murph Vanderpool a question that has haunted him. The tension between his family's fear and his own longing fuels a restless curiosity that drives him toward the rocket despite their warnings.
Under the cover of a hurried goodbye, Pete slips away, hands a wrench to Murph and becomes caught up in the humming machinery and whispered talk of parsecs and off‑ram. At the same time his family plans a picnic on Indian Hill, a celebration that will pit youthful adventure against the looming presence of the Hester, the rocket they call the “glass rocket.” As the day unfolds, Pete must decide whether to follow his dream of soaring beyond the fields or stay grounded by the people who love him.
