Ashes

In the soot-blackened railroad yards of the D. & R. system, Juan Mendoza spends the night guiding a massive clamshell bucket through a deep ash pit. Quiet, shy, and unfailingly kind, he is the sort of man who cannot ignore a cry for help—even when the midnight whistle is about to sound and the yard is full of danger.

One night, Juan discovers a starving puppy locked inside an empty freight car. He rescues the trembling animal, shares his lunch, and carries it into the grimy world of engines, cranes, smoke, and steel. As the puppy wins his affection, Juan’s simple act of compassion brings him into the rough company of the ash-pit crew and raises difficult questions about kindness, responsibility, and the price of doing what feels right.

Set against a vivid, hard-edged railroad landscape, this story follows an ordinary workingman whose gentle nature is tested in an unforgiving place. The looming ash pit and the rescued dog give the tale an atmosphere of suspense, tenderness, and quiet moral courage.
