The tale opens in a restless Hungarian village where a frantic herald bursts into the square, shouting “Gyünnek!” The shout halts the forge, the magistrate’s council, and spreads through the streets like a storm. In the middle of this upheaval, Balázs, a diligent high‑school student, is reciting the Aeneid when a strange, buzzing chorus of unseen instruments floods his room, pulling his attention away from the Latin verses.
Compelled by the mysterious sound, Balázs rushes to his father's study and learns that a massive recruitment parade – verbunkos musicians, gypsy fiddlers, and uniformed troops – is marching toward the manor. The vivid procession, with its clattering boots and reckless energy, reflects both the excitement and the dread of a community on the brink of war. Listeners are invited to step into this charged moment, feeling the clash of tradition, authority, and youthful curiosity as the village braces for what comes next.
