Ansgario

In the early ninth century a continent still shrouded in pagan darkness is on the brink of change. A young man named Ansgario, born into a noble German family, is haunted by a vivid dream in which a luminous figure urges him to abandon vanity and devote himself to a higher purpose. Inspired by that vision, he embraces monastic life and soon discovers a fierce determination to bring the Christian word to the fierce northern peoples.

Sent by the Frankish emperor and equipped with language training, Ansgario sets out for the rugged shores of Scandinavia. He learns the tongues and customs of the local chieftains, preparing to speak a message that challenges long‑held gods and violent traditions. His early sermons, delivered on makeshift pulpits in icy villages, reveal both his relentless zeal and his willingness to endure hardship for a cause he believes can soften even the hardest hearts.

Accompanying royal envoys from King Emund, he begins a perilous journey across the Baltic toward Jutland. The trek promises encounters with wary warriors, harsh weather, and the ever‑present tension between old rites and new faith—setting the stage for a mission that will test his resolve in ways he has never imagined.
