Set in the rugged frontier of mid‑nineteenth‑century Mexico, the story follows a charismatic member of a daring cavalry unit known as the Contre‑Guérilla. Proudly called the Diablos colorados, these soldiers drink hard, fight harder, and speak with a flamboyant bravado that carries them through dusty towns and hostile mountain passes. When a young sergeant catches sight of Anita, a striking señorita whose black eyes haunt his thoughts, his military discipline gives way to a reckless longing to win her favor.
Leaving his column a day early, he trades his tired mount for a bright mustang and rides toward the distant town of Salinas, his heart as volatile as the powder‑strewn trail beneath him. The journey is a vivid blend of hospitality from rancheros, the ever‑present threat of Chinaco raiders, and the intoxicating promise of a stolen moment with his beloved. Listeners are drawn into the narrator’s inner conflict—honor versus desire—while the Mexican landscape pulses with heat, gunfire, and the echo of galloping hooves.

A restless, wide-ranging figure in 19th-century Quebec, this journalist, novelist, and folklorist moved from war reporting and newspaper work into politics, then left behind one of French Canada’s best-known legends, La chasse-galerie. He also served as mayor of Montreal and helped shape modern French-language journalism in North America.
