AN HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF ALL THE VOYAGES ROUND THE WORLD, PERFORMED BY ENGLISH NAVIGATORS;
Commodore BYRON’s VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD, In 1764, 1765, and 1766.
Captain WALLIS’s VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD.
Captain CARTERET’s VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD, In 1766, 1767, 1768 and 1769.
CAPTAIN COOK’s VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD. In 1768, 1769, 1770 and 1771.
The volume brings together the firsthand reports of England’s great sea‑men, from Drake’s daring circumnavigation in the late 1500s to Cook’s pioneering maps of the Pacific. Extracted directly from the explorers’ journals and enriched with period maps and prints, it offers a vivid window onto the motivations, hardships and discoveries that shaped the Age of Sail. Listeners will hear the same words that guided ships across uncharted oceans and into foreign ports, presented in a clear, chronological narrative.
The third volume focuses on Commodore Byron’s 1764‑66 expedition, the first royal directive to push further into the South Seas. Setting out from the Downs, Byron’s squadron of the Dolphin and the Tamar makes early stops at Madeira, the Canaries and Rio de Janeiro, where diplomatic ceremonies, unexpected crew absences and inventive attempts to freshen water reveal the daily realities of long voyages. A sudden storm forces the loss of guns and tests the crew’s resolve as they chart a course into colder southern latitudes, promising more unseen lands ahead.
