Gary Elvin has found himself lodged in the lively home of the Schermerhorn twins, popular tenth‑graders with a red convertible, a swimming pool, and a constant stream of teenage parties. He enjoys a private room and a few adult comforts, but the endless gatherings leave him yearning for a quieter life and a chance to move on from his teaching job. As the weeks crawl toward June, Elvin daydreams about a fresh start at a small college.

One night a strange red flare streaks across the sky, crashing into the field beyond the ranch.
