Description

A young gentleman, raised on the docks of Portsmouth and longing for the sea, leaves a comfortable life in London to take command of a merchant venture bound for Smyrna. His departure is bittersweet—he parts from his loving wife and infant son, promising to return with tales of distant ports and exotic marvels. The early leg of the voyage passes peacefully, the wind filling the Antelope’s sails and the crew’s spirits, while the narrator reflects on the homes he has left behind.

Soon, however, the journey takes a dark turn. The ship is seized by Barbary corsairs, and the narrator finds himself thrust into the harsh reality of captivity in Algiers, enduring months of brutal slavery far from the familiar shores of England. His account chronicles the daily struggles, the strange customs of his captors, and the desperate plans he hatches for freedom, offering a vivid glimpse into a perilous world few have witnessed.
