A SPIRIT OF AVARICE
John Blows, a proud but down‑on‑his‑luck bricklayer, finds himself abruptly dismissed from the construction site, the foreman’s insults still ringing in his ears. The confrontation spills over into his cramped home, where his wife’s accusations and his children’s cries add to a growing sense of worthlessness. After a few pints at the local pub, he decides to abandon the town that has treated him so harshly and set out for a fresh start beyond the river’s edge.
As he walks toward the water, the early morning air feels like a promise of freedom, and he pauses to smoke a pipe before the journey truly begins. A sudden splash pulls him into an unexpected rescue, forcing him to confront both his own desperation and a fleeting chance to help a drowning child. The episode leaves him questioning what kind of man he wants to become as the river carries him toward an uncertain future.

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
