Description

On a bright winter night the officers of Fort Ellsworth host the season’s grand ball, the hall awash with waltzing couples, glittering gowns and the lilting strains of the Merry Widow. Among the polished crowd, the women—wives, sisters, and town girls—dance with a quiet awareness that any moment their lives could be shattered by orders arriving from beyond the frontier. The festive atmosphere feels like a curtain‑raiser, a brief interlude before the real drama of military duty begins.

Standing apart from the revelry is Lieutenant Max Doran, a handsome, wealthy young cavalry officer whose reputation for polo, boxing and daring exploits makes him the object of many admiring glances. Beneath his charming smile lies a restless ambition and a sense that his true test lies far from the polished parquet, in the harsh realities of a foreign legion. As the doors swing open and a dazzling newcomer makes her entrance, the evening’s music shifts, hinting that the night will set in motion choices that could alter the course of his soldier’s life.
