Description

Set against the rugged backdrop of a remote northern Scottish parish during the tumultuous years of the Disruption, the novel paints a vivid portrait of a community caught between old loyalties and new convictions. The enthusiastic young Free Church minister, Roderick Brown, and his sister navigate the fervent zeal of their congregants as well as the entrenched influence of the Drysdales, the great family of the neighboring estate. Through wry humor and keen observation, the narrative captures the everyday dramas of peasants, tradesmen, and landowners alike.

A violent storm drives the minister to a remote shoreline, where he discovers a lone infant washed ashore by the sea. Moved by compassion, he takes the child home, offering care that quickly becomes the subject of whispered speculation among the village gossip. As loyalties clash and rumors swirl, the fragile balance between the Free Church supporters and the established elite begins to fray, setting the stage for deeper conflicts.
