A Reluctant Hero
Henry Potts is an ordinary village clerk with an extraordinary imagination. Between stocking shelves at Baxter’s, tending the stove, and carrying out his family’s errands, he dreams over old stories of courage—especially the tale of Horatius standing alone at the bridge. His wife sees only a grown man neglecting practical responsibilities, while Henry’s restless son dismisses heroic legends as “old bunk.”
Caught between modest means, domestic duties, and a longing to be more than an unnoticed clerk, Henry finds daily life increasingly charged with the possibilities he discovers in books. A treacherous snowy hill, a bustling village street, and the small obligations of family become the setting for a quiet struggle between caution and courage. This warm, gently humorous story follows an unassuming man whose idea of heroism may be far removed from the grand adventures he reads about—but perhaps no less meaningful.
