In the rugged highlands of late‑sixteenth‑century Scotland, ancient clan rivalries still scorch the countryside. A deadly feud between the powerful Drummonds and the Murrays erupts into a brutal church fire, leaving women and children dead while one survivor is rescued by a rival. The king’s swift retribution forces the aggressors into exile, sowing the seeds for a new cycle of vengeance that will echo through the generations.
Against this backdrop, a royal forester named Drummond‑Erinch meets a band of outlawed MacGregors who view his hunting as a provocation. They murder him, display his severed head at the house of Ardvoirlich, and force the lady of the house to confront the horror. Traumatized, she flees into the woods, descends into madness, and later, after a desperate return, gives birth to a child whose fate will become entwined with the lingering blood‑feud.
