Description

A snow‑laden February morning brings a gaunt, cloaked stranger to the modest inn of the Legrády brothers. He staggers in with a tiny black satchel, his face hidden beneath a wide brim, and collapses into the guestroom pleading for fire and warmth. The innkeeper, Mrs. Hall, hurriedly tends to his needs, yet the man remains unmoving, staring out the window as the harsh wind whips the flakes against the panes.

Her curiosity grows as she notices his peculiar attire: a deep‑blue eye that seems to flicker, a tangled web of black ribbons binding his head, and hair that peeks out in strange, spiky tufts. Even after she offers to dry his coat and hat, he refuses, insisting he will not uncover himself. The atmosphere thickens with an uncanny sense that the visitor is more than a weary traveler, hinting at a hidden nature that will ripple through the quiet town’s everyday life.

About the author

H. G. (Herbert George) Wells

H. G. (Herbert George) Wells

1866–1946

A pioneer of modern science fiction, this English writer imagined time travel, alien invasion, and invisible men with a mix of adventure and sharp social insight. His stories still feel lively because they pair big ideas with very human fears and hopes.
