PREFACE.
INTRODUCTION.
In the late 1760s a young explorer set out from Prince of Wales Fort on Hudson Bay, driven by Indigenous stories of a glittering copper source at a river’s mouth on the Arctic coast. Guided by the harsh realities of the barren north, he and his small party endured endless snow, tangled muskeg and the uncertainty of uncharted waterways. Their first two forays failed, yet each setback deepened their knowledge of the land and its peoples, laying a careful groundwork for what came next.
The third expedition finally broke through the icy expanse, reaching the Coppermine River and unveiling a landscape that had never before been described in European print. Hearne’s journal records vivid observations of the region’s flora, fauna and geology, offering a rare glimpse into the natural history of far‑northern Canada. This newly edited edition enriches his narrative with detailed notes, maps and illustrations, allowing modern listeners to experience the wonder and perseverance of an early adventure in the Canadian Arctic.
