Description

This volume gathers some of the most detailed early accounts of eighteenth‑century exploration, weaving together ship logs, scientific notes and vivid sketches. Readers follow a Royal Navy expedition as it departs England, rounds perilous capes, and pushes into the icy waters of the Southern Ocean, where the crew records the sight of unfamiliar harbours, strange ice formations and a handful of newly charted islands. Along the way, the narrative captures tense encounters with indigenous peoples, the challenges of maintaining supplies, and the meticulous observations that laid the groundwork for modern geography.

The second half of the collection shifts northward, chronicling a later voyage that seeks a passage through the far‑west of North America. Early stages describe preparations in European ports, the crossing of the equatorial belt, and the first impressions of remote coasts and isolated settlements. Throughout, the work blends practical navigation advice with natural‑history insights, offering a window into the curiosity and determination that drove the age of discovery.
