E-text prepared by Michael Gray
In a fertile stretch of ancient Judah, a well‑to‑do family leaves their beloved Bethlehem to escape a devastating famine, seeking greener pastures across the Jordan in Moab. Tragedy soon strikes: the patriarch dies, and both sons perish, leaving the matriarch, Naomi, a widow bereft of children and home. Amid this grief, Naomi’s two daughters‑in‑law, Ruth and Orpah, cling to her, their loyalty tested by cultural divides and the looming prospect of returning to their own families.
When Naomi decides to journey back to Bethlehem, she urges the women to part ways, fearing they will be unwelcome strangers. Orpah obeys, but Ruth makes a startling choice, pledging to share Naomi’s fate and faith, even if it means abandoning her own people. Their arrival in Bethlehem at the start of the barley harvest sets the stage for a quiet, steadfast love that will ripple through the community and beyond.
