Read aloud without page numbers or headers

A real page from a NIST report, and exactly what Listenly reads from it: running headers and page numbers are left out, and long web addresses are cut to the site name.

We have only started on our development of our country.

The progress has been wonderful enough—but when we compare what we have done with what there is to do, then our past accomplishments are as nothing.

PDF to audio questions

How do I get a PDF read aloud to me?

Upload the PDF on this page and press play once its text is ready. Listenly reads it aloud in the voice you choose and remembers where you stopped.

Can I convert a PDF to audio for free?

Yes, for the first 20 minutes: new accounts get them with Standard voices, no card required. After that you pay as you go: ~$1.50/hr of audio with Standard voices or ~$2.50/hr with HD voices. Replaying audio you’ve already generated is free.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to audio?

Yes. Every PDF goes through text recognition (OCR), so scanned pages are read just like digital text. Files can be up to 50 MB. A free account can import up to 1,000 PDF pages a day, and 3,000 once you’ve bought credit.

Does it read page numbers and headers aloud?

No. Running headers, footers and page numbers are left out, and long web addresses are cut to the site name. Footnote markers and margin notes may still be read.

How does it handle tables, equations and images?

Tables are read row by row, cell by cell, which suits short tables better than big spreadsheets. Equations are spoken in words, in English even when the document isn’t. Images and charts are left out of the audio.

How long does it take to convert a PDF to audio?

Listenly prepares the text first, which takes longer for bigger files. Then you can press play: audio is generated as you listen, so you don’t wait for the whole file and pay only for what’s narrated.

Can I download a PDF as an MP3 or M4B audiobook?

You can download an M4B audiobook with chapter markers or a single M4A file; MP3 isn’t offered. Parts you’ve already listened to are included free, the cost of the rest is shown before you confirm, and we email the link when it’s ready.

Can I listen to a PDF on my phone?

Yes. Open Listenly in your phone’s browser and add it to your home screen to use it like an app. Your place is saved across devices, and playback goes up to 3× speed.

What languages and voices are available?

57 languages, detected automatically, and 36 voices you can preview before you start. Voices sound best in English and other Latin-alphabet languages such as French and German, and may carry an accent in others.

Is my PDF private?

Yes. Uploads are visible only to you unless you choose to share one by link from its page.
