On the windswept barrier between the Atlantic and Virginia’s mainland, the tiny island of Chincokeague lives in the shadow of its larger neighbor, Assateague—a protected haven for wild ponies, deer and migrating birds. The island’s sturdy residents make a living from chickens, oysters and the beloved annual Pony Penning Day, when the fire‑men herd the untamed ponies across the channel and auction the young colts to fund the town’s fire‑fighting gear. This close‑knit community cherishes its traditions, yet the sea’s moods can isolate them in an instant, reminding everyone how fragile their island life truly is.
At the heart of the story is the Beebe family, who run Pony Ranch at the southern tip. Grandpa, Grandma and their grandchildren, Paul and Maureen, have long tended to the celebrated movie star pony, Misty, whose fame brings both pride and profit. When a storm looms and news spreads that Misty is about to foal, the family rallies—preparing a new stable, dreaming of a healthy colt, and hoping the upcoming birth will secure their future on the island.
