A quiet London night finds a young solicitor boarding the last eastbound train, his mind still humming from a dinner with friends. The carriage is almost empty, its plush first‑class compartment a perfect stage for a keen observer. As the train rolls into the darkness, he settles in, ready to note the habits of anyone who might cross his path.

Two strangers take the seats opposite him, each a study in contrast.
