Description

The story opens with a seasoned officer recalling the arrival of the dashing Major Shirley, a polished aide‑de‑camp whose smile hides a restless curiosity about both duty and the fashionable circles of London. Their banter about a certain Miss Gauntlet hints at a lingering affection and a family estate that may soon change hands, while the conversation swiftly turns to the urgent order to advance into Hesse against the Duc de Broglie. As the narrator prepares his men, the narrative blends witty repartee with the grim anticipation of war.

The Scots Greys, famed for their relentless bravery, push through unfamiliar roads toward the fortified village of Bergen, where earthen corbeilles shelter a fierce French line. Amid the clatter of artillery and the flash of muskets, the regiment’s confidence is summed up in a proud declaration that they are “second to none” in Europe. Readers are drawn into a world where bold cavalry charges and simmering personal rivalries set the stage for a romance that will unfold as the battlelines shift.
