When the Easter break draws to a close at the grand Markham Chase, the household finds itself in an unexpected lull. Sir William, a prominent political figure, has departed for a party meeting, and the fashionable guests have scattered, leaving only the matriarch and her children to run the house. Freed from the usual strictures, the youngsters revel in a makeshift carnival of picnics, impromptu dances, and playful games under their mother's watchful eye.
But the carefree days are shadowed by the looming return to school and the inevitable re‑imposition of duties. The boys anticipate cricket and boating, while the girls sense the return of governesses and the loss of their temporary freedom. As the children scramble to squeeze every last moment of joy out of the lingering spring, the story captures the bittersweet transition from holiday indulgence to the order of everyday life.
