Description

On a remote Finnish island, the narrator recalls a time when horses were as common as cattle, pulling sleds across frozen seas each winter. Those relentless 'rikostalvi' years set the rhythm of village life, with every home keeping at least one sturdy mount. He remembers his grandfather’s prized horse, the animal that carried him to the western shore to watch a foreign ship approach.

The story shifts to the long‑awaited silk‑laden ship Anna Maria, laden with champagne, cognac and exotic fabrics that promise a taste of luxury to the islanders. As the old man straps his horse and a few strong men cling to its mouth, the whole village gathers on the frosty coast, eyes fixed on the horizon. When the vessel finally drifts into the northern inlet amid a sudden storm, anticipation turns to tension, leaving the narrator’s memory tinged with both wonder and unease.
