In a modestly furnished kitchen of a Hämeenlinna farmhouse, the evening unfolds with the clatter of dishes and the hum of conversation. Matti, the patriarch, flips through the newspaper while his wife Kaisu knits, and his mother Vappu spins yarn, each worried about the recent rash of robberies that have plagued the nearby villages. Their worries are punctuated by a chorus of domestic disputes, as the women argue over chores and the looming threat outside their door.
The arrival of the neighbor Niittynen, a lanky farmer with a calm demeanor, adds a new layer to the tension. He brings news of the bandits and offers his own brand of reassurance, prompting the women—Kaisu, Vappu, and their spirited sister Helena—to assert their courage in the face of fear. Their sharp repartee, laced with humor and a hint of rivalry, reveals the everyday anxieties of rural life in the early 1920s.
