In a world that predates even the first carvings on stone, a band of early humans—known as the Oulhamr—cling to the fragile glow of fire, their lifeline against the endless night. Their days are ruled by the crackle of flames that keep predators at bay, harden tools, and bring warmth to a harsh, untamed landscape. When the fire sputters and finally dies, the tribe is plunged into a darkness that threatens to erase their very way of life.
Guided by the stoic leader Faouhm, the survivors set out across bleak marshes, savannas, and cavernous forests, searching for a new source of light. With women, men, and children dwindling in number, each step becomes a test of endurance and hope. The narrative follows their desperate trek, the bonds that hold them together, and the primal struggle to keep the ember of humanity alive.

Best known for vivid prehistoric adventures and early science fiction, this French-language writer helped imagine whole worlds before those genres had fully taken shape. His stories mix curiosity, danger, and a surprisingly modern feel.
