Lumottu maa: Kertomus nuorisolle

In the summer of 1918 two siblings, Aino and Reino, set out from a modest Central Finnish village, where food is scarce and every household is feeling the strain of hard times. With a nearly empty knapsack, they trek a mile‑long distance to a remote forest cottage, hoping to trade a few modest gifts for bread and butter. The journey winds through birch groves, hazel thickets and a rushing creek, the landscape shifting from gentle valleys to the steep, rocky face of Kalliovaaran.

As clouds gather and a sudden thunderstorm rolls in, the twins seek shelter in a natural stone cave, its moss‑covered walls offering a brief haven from the downpour. While waiting for the rain to pass, Aino teases Reino about his secret affection for the village girl Ruth, revealing the tender, sometimes awkward, emotions of youth. Their conversation, set against the echo of distant thunder, captures both the uncertainty of the era and the timeless hope that lies in simple, shared moments.
