Born Rudolf Railo in Viipuri on October 23, 1869, he later used the author name Ilmari Tulimaa. Finnish reference sources identify him as a Finnish writer, and they also note an earlier family name, Räsänen.
Tulimaa is remembered for novels and stories published in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of the best-known works available today is Lumottu maa, a story for young readers that follows siblings on a journey through Central Finland during the summer of 1918 and into a mysterious underground world.
He died on August 15, 1932. Although he is not widely known outside Finland today, his books remain of interest to readers exploring older Finnish popular fiction and children's literature.
