The three friends—Nicky, Tom and Cliff—find themselves on a quiet Jamaican plantation after their academy closes because of a flu outbreak. Invited by Cliff’s father, a noted scholar of Caribbean peoples, they spend their days sifting through the island’s soil for Carib pottery and forgotten ornaments, hoping to add a piece of history to a New York museum. The heat, the rustle of palm trees, and the occasional chatter of locals set a vivid backdrop for their first real fieldwork adventure.
Early one morning, a small, dark‑skinned boy appears on the fence, watching their dig with an unsettling intensity that sparks Nicky’s imagination. While the boys debate his motives, Nicky can’t shake the feeling that the boy’s gaze is linked to an old family secret—a faded parchment bearing a message from the notorious pirate Captain Kidd. Intrigued and uneasy, the trio decides to follow the clues, unaware how this chance encounter will pull them deeper into a mystery that blends legend with real treasure.
