Giles Saltren arrives in the countryside, intent on visiting his mother and the local rectory. He steps out of a hired trap near Chillacot and immediately spots Samuel Ceely walking arm‑in‑arm with the pretty Joan Melhuish. The sight of the crippled old man—his own father—stops Giles in his tracks, and he feels a sudden obligation to look after him. The encounter throws him into the tangled social web of the village.
Samuel, once a promising game‑keeper now reduced to sweeping, insists that a promise from the late lord should secure him a modest wage. He confides in Joan that without the job he cannot hope for marriage or a stable future, and he hints at a possible legal dispute over the lord’s death. Giles, newly thrust into a position of authority, must decide how far he will intervene to protect Samuel, his mother, and the delicate reputations of those around him. The tension between duty, secrecy, and ambition begins to rise.
