A summer at Gosling Lake brings the Stag Patrol of Boy Scouts together for swimming, camping, and the usual rites of friendship. When Jack Crandall tumbles from a pine and breaks his leg, his comrades rally, ferrying him to the clubhouse and securing the care of Dr. Spellman. While Jack’s sturdy spirit helps him heal quickly, the days stretch on with crutches, porch walks, and the steady rhythm of campfire stories.
Beyond the lake’s calm surface, the scouts’ world widens. Their curiosity leads them to Uncle Elk, the reclusive woodsman who watches over the forest and its hidden paths. As Mike Murphy paddles out to check on Jack and the hermit, hints of whispered rumors and unseen trails begin to surface, promising a series of small adventures that will test the boys’ resourcefulness and deepen their bond.
