Set against the rolling waters of the Mississippi and its northern tributary, the Minnesota, the story opens in the spring of 1861 as the nation erupts into civil war. As President Lincoln calls for volunteers, Colonel John C. Pemberton leads his battery away from Fort Ridgely, watched by a restless Sioux nation whose hunting grounds have been eroded by conflict and hunger. The looming clash over the river’s control hints at the wider turmoil that will sweep across the frontier.
Amid this turmoil, a cast of vivid characters emerges: Barker, the seasoned trapper who knows the land’s secret paths; Tatanka, a sharp‑witted Sioux scout; and the young Southern brothers Tim and Bill Ferguson, who find themselves far from home. Their uneasy ally, Cousin Hicks, adds a note of doubt as loyalties shift. By the summer of 1863, their journeys bring them to the besieged city of Vicksburg, where the stakes of war and survival become painfully clear.
